Finals Week! Just a few measly exams to get past and then it's Christmas break - no sweat, right? Monday and Tuesday are reserved for exam review (Christmas party on Tuesday) and then Wed-Friday are exams (dismissal at noon each day).
Wednesday- Bible and 10th grade history exams. A complete synopsis of the history exam was given in class last week, and a grade will be taken Monday morning on your test review. Notebooks will be collected from those that are exempt on Monday; those taking the exam will leave theirs after the test.
Thursday - 11th grade history and arts apprec exams.
Friday - Spanish I and Spanish II exams. Spanish I has already been given a complete synopsis. Spanish II will need to study all vocabulary, the four basic tenses (with endings), and verb conjugation in the present tense (including the irregulars).
For more details please contact me through my school email address: robertakers@somersetchristian.com . Thanks!

December 7-11, 2009
Almost there! This is the last regular week of classes before the Christmas break, and, as should be expected, most classes will be finishing units, testing, and beginning the exam review. I'll start with a note on the upcoming exams in my classes:
US History: Exam is cumulative and will focus on people and events that shaped America. Beginning Thursday of this week I will begin previewing topics that will be covered.
Spanish I: Cumulative. Will cover the first four chapters of the text. Material for review will be given on Monday but will not be covered until after Chapter 4, lesson 9 is complete.
Spanish II: Cumulative. Vocabulary will be the key focus, along with verb conjugation. The review will focus on the four basic tenses, covered earlier this year. Vocab terms will be given in Spanish to be translated to English (opposite all our tests and quizzes).
Now this week's work:
US History: we will finish lecture on the election of 1912 on Monday and will test on Wednesday. The test will include several political cartoons from the lecture about which students will write analytical essays. IMPORTANT NOTE: Note grades count as quizzes (and therefore make up 25% of the overall grade). Following Wednesday's test I will collect notebooks from those who are exempt. Students who are taking the final will need their notes for the test review, and will turn the notebook in the day the exam is given. MAKE SURE YOUR NOTES ARE IN EXCELLENT ORDER AND COMPLETE!
Spanish I: This week we will cover chapter 4, lesson 9 (beginning on page 72). The lesson includes reviews of the verbs ser and tener, and reviews possessive adjectives. New material presented is telling time in Spanish. We will test on Friday.
Spanish II: We have one more vocabulary quiz to take (Monday) and will learn verbs like gustar (page 92). Tuesday will be for review, and test over chapter 3, lesson 2 on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will be verb tense review (and some time on object pronouns, if necessary).
As I mentioned in last week's post, this time is so crucial to finishing the semester correcty. There are many distractions, but keep your focus! You've worked hard to make the grade, don't slip up at the last!
God bless!

November 30-December 4, 2009
Thus begins one of the most important stretches in the school year - the Thanksgiving to Christmas dash. While the temptation is to take it easy, remember that in no time we'll be facing semester exams, and we have quite a bit to get in before that.
In Bible class we've got a test over Unit 2 (lessons 11 through 18) that we'll take on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In US History, there'll be a test on Tuesday covering the administrations of Teddy Roosevelt, William H. Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. Starting Wednesday we'll take a closer look at the election of 1912 (which is also the genesis of this week's homework assignment).
In Spanish I we'll cover chapter 4, lesson 8 (pages 66-71). It's another short lesson (and all review except for the vocabulary)so we'll be able to finish and test on Friday. We'll be doing all the activities and learning the Spanish numbers to a million.
In Spanish II we'll begin studying chapter 3, lesson 2 (begins page 84). This week we'll attempt to cover through page 92, activity 10. The primary focus is indirect object pronouns (IOPs) and using direct and indirect object pronouns together. We'll have vocabulary quizzes beginning Tuesday and running every day through Friday.
If there are any questions please send me an email. Thanks and God bless!

November 16-20
Here's a look at the week ahead:
Bible: We'll be doing lessons 16 and 17 in class. Remember that there will be a test next week over lessons 11-18 and homework/quiz grades will be given based on bookwork.
US History: We should be able to finish lecture for test 9 and take the test Friday. At least that's the goal, barring any unforseen interuptions.
Spanish I: It's time to get moving! Last week we missed some classes, so we'll have to pick up the pace. Starting with a test on Monday that covers all of chapter 3, we'll go over the material in chapter 4, lesson 7 (all review) and be ready for a (small) test on Friday that covers pages 58-65.
Spanish II: Vocab quizzes Monday-Thursday and a test over chapter 3, lesson 1 on Friday. The grammar we're covering is important: demonstrative adjectives/pronouns (p 76), the relative pronoun (p 77), and uses of the infinitive (p 80). Do yourselves a favor - go back and review direct object pronouns! Next week we'll be working on indirect object pronouns, and you won't want to get them confused.
Sadly, there's been another death in the church that I pastor. I would ask your prayers for the family that has lost both father and mother only eight days apart of unrelated illnesses. I will be missing a day for the funeral - most likely Wednesday. The lesson plans listed above take all of this into consideration. Thank you and God bless!

November 9-13, 2009
This week will, unfortunately, be rather unusual. I will not be in class on Monday or Tuesday due to training I'm taking for next year's AP courses and a funeral. Because there are other issues that might affect my schedule this week as well I am not certain how several classes will go. Here's a basic look at what's ahead:
Bible class will cover two lessons this week - lessons 14 and 15. For perspective, there will be a test after lesson 18, in about two weeks.
Spanish I will be reviewing for a test over chapter 3. I'll need a couple days in class to go over the material, so I'm not certain of the exact day the test will take place.
Spanish II will begin chapter 3. We'll be working on some review verb conjugation and command tense to start with.
US History has wrapped up lecture for test 8. Get yourselves prepared! I anticipate that the test will be on Friday.
I'll repost when I've got more specific information. Looking for a good week!

Nov 2-6
Let's hope for a return to normalcy! What an unusual week we've had to end October - Jr/Sr Retreat, APES, and H1N1. I'm looking forward to a productive week ahead.
In Bible class we will (attempt to) decorate our door and (attempt to) move on to Lesson 12.
In Spanish I we will introduce new vocabulary on Monday and begin to study Chapter 3, Lesson 6 (pages 52-57). We will be studying the differences between ser and estar and introducing complex sentences that use the relative pronoun. I anticipate a test on Friday, November 6, and then we will review for the chapter three test.
In Spanish II we will start the week with a test over Chapter 2, Lesson 3 on Monday. Tuesday through Thursday we will review and then have a test on Friday over all of Chapter 2.
In US History, please continue to complete your homework at the website www.robertakers.blogspot.com . We should complete lecture for Test 9 sometime this week (probably Thursay), setting up a test on Monday, November 9.
Thanks and have a great week! Remember to call or email (or comment on this page) if you have any questions. I would love feedback from parents - suggestions for improvements to this website. God bless!

October 19-23, 2009
Hello everyone, and welcome back from the weekend! This is the first week of the second quarter, and all classes are up to date and moving along very well - we've got the makings of a very good year! Here's a look at the week ahead:
Bible class: this week the 11th grade will host chapel on Friday morning at 8:15. As always, but especially this week, all of you parents are invited to attend as our guests! We will be using class time this week to prepare for our opportunity to lead.
US History: This week's homework assignment is posted and should present a nice challenge for everyone. This is an opportunity to research the Supreme Court and to learn about the important topic of civil liberty. In class we will finish our documentary on the post-Civil War presidents and finish lecture for Test 7. I anticipate that the test will be given next Monday or Tuesday.
Spanish I: A special treat starting this week - Sra. Rosa will visit class to help us with conversational skills and share information about her native Mexico. The senora will be visiting us on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next month or so, and will surely be a great benefit to learning Spanish! I'll hand back your tests from Friday (everyone in the class passed - great job, guys!) and we'll begin chapter 3, lesson 5, which begins on page 44. Vocab quizzes will be given every day, and we should be ready for our next test by the end of the week.
Spanish II: Sra Rosa will also be visiting Spanish II, but first we must take the test over chapter 2, section 2. We'll begin chapter 2, section 3, and be forewarned...it's going to take some extra effort! We'll do more irregular verbs and introduce the present progressive construction. Vocab quizzes every day!
ACT Prep kicks off this week, and we'll be spending most of this week taking a pre-test and discussing resources that are available and will be used over the coming quarter.
Vlogs have been posted on the history website under the fall break posting. They are excellent and educational! When all of them have been digitized we'll use them for a history assignment. Looking forward to great things everyone! God bless!

October 12-16, 2009
Hello and welcome to my new student-teacher-parent connection blog "Sic Vita Est". This website will allow students and parents to have access to lesson plans for each week in order to better prepare for class. I will update weekly, typically on Sunday evenings.
First, a few notes on how I will operate the website. Quizzes and tests, once announced, will rarely be moved, though they may if circumstances dictate. However, as assignments are usually made only after the material has been taught in class and I have had an opportunity to get a feel for the students' level of mastery, I won't be posting daily work. Instead I will lay out the subjects to be covered and pages in which they can be found in the text book. (This applies most directly to Spanish classes).
If you have questions it is easiest to connect with me via email. My school email is robertakers@somersetchristian.com. I do not have a planning period, so if you any parent would like to meet for a conference, you may schedule time before or after school through the front office.
This particular week will be an unusual one, to be certain. Returning from fall break and finishing the first quarter are sure to cause some disruptions! Here's how the week looks:
Bible III - No new assignments as we go over the unit test that students took prior to the break. Any late work on lessons 1 through 10 may be turned in for partial credit.
U.S. History - We have a test (Test 6) covering the Civil War scheduled for Wednesday, leaving us Monday and Tuesday to review and get back in the swing of things. An assignment will be posted at www.robertakers.blogspot.com to be completed by Friday. Your notes will be collected after Wednesday's test to be graded. Your notes should be neat, complete, and in a three-ring binder. Your notes will comprise the entirety of your quiz grade for the first quarter, and will be graded as six separate quizzes. Those of you that chose to do the vlog assignment have until Friday to turn it in. I would appreciate it if you would post your video or a link to it on the history class website.
Spanish I - Although we have finished the daily quizzes from chapter 3, section 4 (beginning on page 35), I think it would be beneficial to spend some extra time with the grammar we have covered. Therefore we will spend this week going over adjective-noun agreement and verb conjugation, specifically focusing on the verb "estar". Test on Friday!
Spanish II - This will be a very challenging week (fair warning!). We are studying chapter 2, lesson 2, which is divided into two sections. We have finished the first, learning to conjugate irregular verbs (pages 47-52). We will briefly review and then wade into the imperative (pages 53-56). Test Friday!
The senior class will begin work in earnest on year books this week and finish the week with a special treat - to be announced later!
I hope this will help! Feel free to contact me with suggestions for improvement. God bless!
