Welcome to the IPS (Introduction to Public Speaking) class site! You will come here most weeks to complete your homework assignments. Remember that assignments must be posted by midnight on Wednesday evening for credit.
Here are the websites we will reference regularly: TED Talks (they are all on youtube.com but can also be found at www.ted.com. The class material will come from www.publicspeakingproject.org, although I doubt you will ever be required to visit the site for class purposes. Keep it in mind though, as it is a fantastic resource and may come in handy in other classes down the road.
Here's your first assignment: After watching a TED (Technology/Education/Design) Talk video, give a short response by replying to this post. We will want to know a) the speaker's name and topic; b) your assessment of the speech. Did the speech make sense to you? Was it well-organized? Did it impact the way you think? Did the speaker use humor or get emotional? If you were speaking on the topic, how might you have addressed the issue to be more effective? Answer these questions in your post. Use complete sentences, appropriate paragraph structure, and real words (not "cuz" or "kinda", etc.).
Your answer should be 200-250 words and must be entirely your own work. Plagiarized (copied) work will be given a grade of zero and will result in punishment. If you have obviously made minimal effort to complete the assignment or it appears that you did not actually watch the speech, your grade will be affected accordingly.
Best of luck. Email me if you have questions. Make sure the answer to your question isn't in the above paragraphs before contacting me.
do we need to create a blog to write this bro akers and thank you for praying for you
ReplyDeleteGot it. By the way do you want us to wright it on a piece of paper and give it to you at school?
ReplyDeleteThe title of the video is A visual history of social dance in 25 moves. The speaker of the video is Camille A. Brown. The speaker of the video was very good at explaining all that you needed to know about all 25 of the dances and where they came from. It was very well organized, especially it being probably one of the shortest videos. The video was only four minutes and thirty-six seconds so it was not really long at all. But she was really good at explaining all of the dances in that short amount of time. It showed me a lot of cool and interesting dances but it did not really change or impact they way I think. The speaker Camille A. Brown got a little emotional while she was speaking. She was not crying but you could tell that it meant a lot to her and she cared for it a lot. I would have said that people say it is just dancing but it really is not. Some people use sign language which is the only way that they can communicate and that is a lot like dancing. Also a few of the dances were the only way the African Americans or black people had fun when they were slaves. Also we have danced for hundreds of years and still dance today. Dancing is fun and sometimes funny.

ReplyDeleteTopic: A visual history of social dance in 25 moves
The speech about A visual history of social dance in 25 moves by Camille A. Brown was very organized, I liked how it went from the past to the present. The speaker seemed to be very knowledgeable about the history of dance and told how dance has influenced history and also was used to remind people of who they are and where they came from. I enjoyed watching this speech because I could understand it, it made sense to me and it was easy to follow. This speech did impact the way I think, because I never really thought much about the history of dance or the meaning of different dance moves or how dance could impact peoples life before I watched this video. Although the speaker did not use humor or get emotional, she was still able to keep me very interested in the topic. If I were the speaker of this topic I wouldn’t change much about it, but the only thing I would change is to give a little more back ground information on how some of the different dances came about and progressed.

ReplyDeleteTopic: 10 ways to have a better conversation
This speech about 10 ways to have a better conversation by Celeste Headlee was very well organized. I understood what she was talking about the whole time, and did not get lost in what she was saying. The video was entertaining and not boring to watch. This video taught me about some very effective ways to have a better conversation with someone. It impacted me by showing that it isn't that hard to start and have a good conversation. Having a good conversation seems very simple now. Celeste was very humorous throughout the video and the crowd was engaged. One of the things I learned from the video was to just listen when someone is talking to you and try not to think about other things during the conversation. If I were to address this situation and speak about it, I wouldn't change much from how Celeste presented the topic but I would try to get to the point faster and try not to add too many details irrelevant to the topic. Overall this TED talk video was very helpful and a great video in general. By watching her, hopefully it will be easier for me to speak in front of a crowd.

ReplyDeletemy assignment is from the teds talk video the next step in nanotechnology spoken by George Tulevski.to answer question one yes the speech made vey good sense to me.The speaker helped by doing a few things first he was speaking in a very clear voice,Second he made sure to not use many confusing and overcomplicated words. To answer the second question yes the speech was very well organized. To help more the speaker firstly made sure not to get off topic, And secondly he tried to get the idea across without wasting the audiences time.To answer your third question both no and yes. I had already heard some of his theory but mostly yes. The speech did change my way of thinking because, It showed me that eventually we are going to need a better way of evolving todays technology for the next generation.to answer the forth question both yes and no. yes the speaker did become emotional at certain parts of his presentation, I think he did this at those certain parts to show the value and the importance of the certain to the topic. when I said no I was directing that towards thee other part of the question and it is my personal opinion he did not make any jokes because he wanted the audience to know that the topic he was discussing with them was a important matter. Lastly to answer your final question I do not think I could of done it better. I think the speaker did a great job by trying to keep it short but still getting his point across, And he also made sure that he used words that were easy to comprehend.
The speaker's name was Shawn Achor and the topic was the happy secret to better work. My assessment of the video was that setting higher goals does not make you happy but by being happy you can set higher goals. He was very humorous and made sure that he was making sense. He was quite organized because if had not been it wouldn't make any sense. It made plenty of sense to me. The way it impacted me was that it is not possible for me to be happy with grades if I want higher ones. The way I can get higher grades is to be happy. If I was speaking on the topic there is not much I would change. One interesting thing that he did was instead of changing a question like " What could this student do?" most people change it to " What can all these average students do?" He wants us to change to study what the unaverage student can do and ten see how we can change the average in better ways. I believe that this could change people into being the better them then they already are if they want to be that person. This is Jonny.

ReplyDeleteTopic: 10 ways to have a better conversation
This speech 10 ways to have a better conversation I thought was very well organized. I understood everything Celeste said and I wasn't confused at any moment. Throughout the video she used facts and explained each point to help you better understand what she was talking about. That was one of the main reasons I liked her speech. She used humor throughout the speech the audience was laughing and participating with her. For someone as shy as myself this video is very helpful. After I watched this video, it doesn't seem very hard to have a good conversation. I learned to be in the conversation, and to listen to the person that is speaking. I also learned to be brief and not to multi task when I am talking to someone. Celeste gave some good examples one of them was to ask better questions to get a better answer. I thought that was a great point in her speech. Overall I thought this TED talk video was great. I hope to have better conversations in the future.
I watched a video on the website Ted Talks. The speech was called Ten Ways to Fight Boredom. However, it almost felt like a smoking prevention speech. The speaker’s name was Judson Brewer. On a scale of one to ten, I would probably give it a six. The speaker made the impression that he believed in evolution. Whereas, I believe when speaking at a public seminar, you should keep your religious beliefs to yourself (unless of course, it’s a religious seminar). The speech didn’t exactly make sense to me. He worded it in a way that made it sound uninteresting to normal people. The speech was, however, well organized. What he said seemed to flow along with the rest of the speech. I don’t really think it impacted the way I think, it was more of just an entertaining show, more than anything else. Mr. Brewer didn’t really use facts, mostly opinions. The speaker did try to use humor, and was in actuality, very funny. But doesn’t this just prove my point that the whole thing felt like a show? If I were speaking on the topic, I would have tried to talk about things people cared about, and I would really push the smoking hazard. I would also point out little tips about the topic and not wander off the subject.

ReplyDeleteTitle: How to stay calm when you know you'll be stressed
The speech How to stay calm when you know you'll be stressed by Daniel Levitin was very organized. The video taught me what stress really does to your body, and to question my actions before I do them when I’m stressed out. It was a very interesting video to watch. I didn’t get lost in the video and I understood it all. It impacted me by showing me how to help with stress instead of doing stuff I’ll regret in the future. Daniel wasn’t all to humorous, he kept it serious but brought up topics many people can relate to so the crowed was engaged. One important thing I learned and will always remember is to question yourself before you agree or do anything while you’re stressed because it could come out with a bad outcome. If I were speaking on this topic I’d give the same kind of examples Daniel did. I would give examples I knew almost everyone has been through like a death in the family, doctor visits, or even school. I would try being a little humorous, like Daniel did, but I would keep it more serious. By watching this I hope to get better with stress.
My video was titled "how to speak so that people want to listen" this video was done by Julian Treasure, in this video he talked about different ways to make your voice sound appealing to the audience, to your friends, or family. He also said there are ways to make you sound very unappealing, he used a series of seven words; judging, negativity, complaining, excuses, lying, and dogmatism these seven different expressions can cause people to be uninterested in the conversation. But luckily there ways to make you sound interesting to someone these are honesty, authenticity, integrity, and love, these four expressions make someone sound interesting. He also mentioned that you can make your voice do different things like, register, timbre, prosody, pace, pitch, and volume these things can make you sound like you know what your talking about. the speech made perfect sense to me and it was well organized the speech did make me think of really awkward conversations I've had before and how I could've carried it on if I would've know these things.

ReplyDeleteInside the mind of a procrastinator by Tim Urban. The speech was well organized and made a lot of sense he talked about the way people procrastinate and how that will affect your life in a negative way if you do not turn away from procrastinating. Tim Urban also talked about how people that get work done and do not procrastinate have a different mindset than others that do. He also said that procrastinators when it comes to crunch time they have panic mode, and when they're in that panic mode is the only time they are pressured to get work done because they realize something bad could happen if they do not get the work they need to do done. Tim Urban used a lot of analogies to get his point across. Tim Urban also used a lot of humor when he was talking to show that you can have fun but also concentrate on the work that needs done. Tim explain how there's two types of procrastination there's one that has a deadline and you have to get the stuff finished, and there's one without a deadline The one without a deadline can end up giving you long term unhappiness or aggravation.

ReplyDeleteTopic: what happens when you have a disease doctors can't diagnose.
This talk was about a rare disease that many people have but it sees like medicine skipped over it. Myalgic Encephalomelitis or ME has many diffrent symptoms that seem like just a reagular cold or bug that you would stay home and lie on the couch for a few days, but its way more than that and there are actually millions with this disease and for the longest time they didn't know what was wrong with them. Jennifer Brea had hope when she started connected with people online and hearing they're stories and what they were going through and it helped because they understood what she felt like unlike the doctors she would try to explain these pains to but thought it was in her head. This was very well organized because she first told her story. She was a PHD student at Harvard, just got engaged, and loved to run, but one day when she got a fever of 104.7 degrees it all started going down hill. She seen so many specialist but could only tell her its in your head. Next she started to talk about how she had hope and had to make choices of if she was going to sit in the garden for fifteen minutes of even walk a few steps and that's only on good days. Last she shared about everyone else she talked to about they're disease and how they could make it more aware, and that maybe a fever isn't just a fever, and Epalepsy could be mistaken for you bing crazy and instutionalize you until the EEG shows irrnormal activity in the brain waves. This talk had an impact on how lucky most of us are that we know what disease we have and we don't have to be out own doctor or scientist to see what can or can't do to help the pain. This was a very emotional talk and that being able for doctors to say they don't know is okay, because that opens doors of research and finding cures for all types of diseases. I would not change a thing about her speech she had a big effect on almost everyone that was listening, at least half of the audience was crying, but my favorite thing about her speech is that it can be hard to talk about a rough spot and time in your life, but through it all she kept a beautiful smile and sending that message that you can still be happy while living with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is giving everyone else hope that its going to be okay when you have a disease doctors can't diagnose.
